NASCAR is in Martinsville this week for the final race before the championship race next weekend. The Cup Series is at the smallest track on the circuit for this cutoff race and as we have seen in the other series this weekend, we should expect some chaos. Overall, track position is going to be key so if someone can get to the front with cautions falling their way, they could lead a good chunk of the race.
Potential Dominators
Martin Truex
Chase Elliott
Christopher Bell
Ryan Blaney
Truex was really fast in practice and went out and got the pole. He has a great history at Martinsville and is likely to be one of the best cars this weekend. He has a chance to lead early and be one of the top contenders throughout the entire race. Elliott also has a great history at Martinsville and starts next to Truex. He was in the top 5 in lap averages in practice and I would expect him to be a contender as well. He is one of the drivers on the outside of the cutoff for the playoffs so he needs a win to move on to the championship next week. Bell and Blaney looked like two of the best cars on the long run in practice. I expected them to be good coming into the weekend and they look like they will be good in the race. They do start back in 16th and 14th so they have some place differential points that come with them, but I think they will make their way through the field and be contenders up front by the end of the race.
Place Differential
Denny Hamlin
Tyler Reddick
Bubba Wallace
Hamlin wrecked in practice and the team decided to fix the car instead of going to a backup but since he didn’t qualify he starts in the back. He was one of the better cars on lap averages and has huge place differential potential so he will be one of the top options this weekend. Reddick is another top driver that starts towards the back as he rolls off in 31st. He is alright at Martinsville and I would expect him to have top 15 potential with upside for more so he has great place differential potential. Wallace finished 6th here in the spring and has a history of running well in the top 10 at Martinsville. He starts 19th and I expect him to run top 10 this weekend making him a solid value play.
Cheap Options
Carson Hocevar
Justin Haley
Zane Smith
Shane Van Gisbergen
Corey Lajoie
Hocevar has been fast lately and he continued it this weekend in practice as he had top 10 speed in lap averages. He starts back in 27th so he has a good amount of place differential potential and is a great option this week. His teammates Haley and Zane Smith didn’t have as much speed in practice but they both start in the 30s and I would expect them to be able to move forward and be good cheap place differential options for this race. SVG is a solid flier play this week as we usually see good road racers do well at Martinsville. If he can stay out of trouble and get track position he could be a good play this week starting 29th. Lajoie is a good flier play start back in 34th as he has a lot of room to move forward.
